It is the end of May and I have been very busy with some needed garden projects this spring. It would require an 8 ft high very strong fence to keep moose out of my garden. That would be very expensive and is just not in my budget, so I am building hoop cages over my raised beds.
These are constructed much like a plastic covered hoop tunnel except these are covered with wire fencing. They are much more affordable then building a moose-proof fence around my garden. I have several completed and just two more to build. They are also removable for planting and weeding. I hope that they are successful at protecting my crops.
Moose damage is just something that you have to accept here in Alaska. Unless you are willing to build a very strong and tall fence. They recommend that a moose fence needs to be at least 8 foot tall. An adult moose can easily hop over a 6 foot fence and a strong moose can easily push over a simple wire fence. There is a belief that no fence will really stop a hungry adult moose. Some people will install an electric fence, but there are cases when a moose was observed dragging an electric fence that they had knocked down and had become tangled in their antlers. I have decided to make small wire fence cages that will fit over my raised garden beds.
Note: After using these wire cages over my garden beds for several years they seem to accomplish just what I needed to protect my garden from moose damage.
Moose can be a real bad garden pest in Alaska and you can find moose anywhere. It doesn’t matter if you live in the city or rural countryside.
They will destroy a garden full of vegetables very quickly. Usually just as your crops are ready for harvest.
